Ciao John, how are you?
I’m well, a little cold in Chicago this time of year, however it does make for interesting photographs.
What is photography for you?
Photography for me is a way to experience the world, more specifically the built environment; I use this mode of discovery to create photographs that invite the viewer to reconsider how the built environment is constructed. However, I’m not interested in documenting a certain place, but more of a system of economic concerns and the absurdities that exist within built space.
What is Odradek about?
Odradek started out of a previous investigation of buildings within cities that are constantly trying to reinvent themselves. When I was making these pictures I saw parts of them that were trying to reference other things – columns referencing Greek architecture, houses hinting at commercial architecture, etc. For me, these things feel strange or weird, so while I was photographing them I was led to theories of the uncanny, which I attempt to locate within the work. While thinking about these ideas, I create images of buildings in states of dilapidation and reconstruction that feel at once peculiar and haunting.
